After School Program Information
The HTLP After School Program is designed to teach children to love to read by combining children’s natural connection with horses with classic horse books.
Highlights of the HTLP After School Program:
- Addresses the needs of all children in Kindergarten through 6th grade.
- Activities designed for use in after-school settings.
- Lesson plans developed by the Florida Institute of Education at the University of North Florida include decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
- Horse Tales Literacy Project curriculum is also used, providing hands-on, interdisciplinary activities and is aligned to state and national standards.
- Helps to reinforce and improve students' reading skills!
- Students receive their own book(s) to keep for their personal libraries.
- Daily activities include social skills and healthy behaviors such as collaboration and peer mentoring.
- Meets all requirements for mandated literacy component for community-funded after-school programs.
- A fun-filled culminating day of exciting activities for everyone!
- Younger students meet characters from the books they have read and read aloud to a horse!
- Older students have an age-appropriate experience with live horses that is both fun and educational!
- This is a day that students remember for many years to come!
