Summer Camp Program Information

Horse Tales Literacy Project’s Summer Literacy Program is designed to build a bridge of literacy from one school year to the next.

The HTLP Summer Camp Program teaches children to love to read by combining children’s natural connection with horses with classic horse books.

Highlights of the HTLP Summer Camp Program:

• Addresses the needs of all children in Kindergarten through 6th grade.
• Activities for part of the campers’ day, led by trained camp counselors.
• Lesson plans developed by the Florida Institute of Education at the University of North Florida include decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
• Horse Tales Literacy Project curriculum is also used, providing hands-on, interdisciplinary activities and is aligned to state and national standards. 
• HTLP Summer Camp is fun and different from school!
• Helps campers to both retain and gain reading skills!
• Campers receive their own book(s) to keep for their personal libraries.
• Daily activities include social skills and healthy behaviors such as collaboration and peer mentoring.
• Meets all requirements for mandated literacy component for community-funded camps.
• Culminates in a fun-filled day for all!
• Young campers meet characters from the books they have read and read aloud to a horse!
• Older campers have an age-appropriate experience with live horses that is both fun and educational!
• This is a day that campers remember for many years to come!

The program includes:

• Book(s) for campers’ personal library
• A parent letter
• An extensive standards-aligned curriculum
• A counselor guide with resources
• Extensive resources on the HTLP website for both counselors and campers
• Counselor access to the Program Resources area of the HTLP website
• A fun-filled culminating day of exciting and memorable activities for all!
