Volunteer
Horse Tales Literacy Project is run largely by dedicated volunteers, from horse handlers to time keepers, and grant writers to greeters … Our organization could simply not exist without the efforts of our wonderful volunteers!
There is typically a Lead Volunteer (or a team) who plans, organizes, and implements the programs from start to finish. We also have volunteers who talk to the children about horses, distribute books, assist with safety measures, and either use their horses for program events – and sometimes even donate their horses to the program! Whether our volunteers give one hour or hundreds of hours of service, we sincerely appreciate every one!!
To get involved in Horse Tales Literacy Project in your community, please contact the Regional Director of your state; a list of regional directors is available here. If you are interested in starting an HTLP program in your area, general information is available about the basic requirements for the programs via the links on this page. Additionally, you may contact our Home Office.
In this section of the website, you will find resources that explain the roles our volunteers play in greater detail, and how to start a new program in your area.
We do insist that new volunteers watch our online Safety Video and download and read the Safety Manual. The safety of our children is our number one priority, and must be a top priority for all volunteers as well. Please remember that, as a volunteer with a 501(c)3, many expenses you incur while volunteering are tax deductible. [Be sure to consult with your tax advisor and retain all receipts. You may want to visit www.irs.gov for details.]
Thank you for dedicating your time and energy to helping children discover the joys of reading!
